New K-6 School for Nocatee Gets Official Name
A new school serving Nocatee, Ponte Vedra FL has officially been named Palm Valley Academy. The school is located within the Nocatee community. It will include grades K-6 and is part of St. Johns County School District. It is scheduled to open for the 2018-2019 school year.
The school name was chosen from community suggestions and approved by the St. Johns County School Board in March. The school, along with another new school called Freedom Crossing Academy, were built to accommodate students in the fast-growing northern area of the county. The previously existing K-6 classrooms were becoming overcrowded due to rapid population growth in the area.
Palm Valley Academy features unique attributes such as moveable walls and collaborative learning areas. Highlights include a media center, sports fields, science labs, a technology lab and a multi-purpose cafetorium. The three-story building can accommodate almost 1,500 students.
Students will use a combination of traditional textbooks and online resources. Kids are permitted to bring their tablets or laptops from home but must use the technology in accordance with school rules. Each classroom will have approximately four devices for student use as well.
Palm Valley will offer the standard county curriculum along with advanced classes, gifted services, art, music, physical education, extracurricular clubs and interscholastic sports. Students with special needs will have the opportunity to participate in therapeutic interventions such as speech, vision and occupational therapy.
A Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and Student Advisory Committee (SAC) will be formed to promote parent and student involvement.
Jessica Richardson is the principal of the new school. In 2013 she was selected St. Johns County Assistant Principal of the Year. She has been employed by St. Johns County schools for 18 years.
