Fresh Coastal Colors
When you live in a coastal area, there’s just something so natural about incorporating nature’s colors into your home. Best of all, coastal nature provides a wide range of colors from which to choose when decorating your homes in Jacksonville Beach FL. Sand, sky, sea, and the many sea creatures that have amazing colors all make coastal-style decoration such a joy.
You’ll often find in coastal areas that the ceilings of front or back covered porches are painted a light blue, imitating the blue sky overhead (and potentially warding away bad spirits). Yet you don’t have to limit yourself to just painting the porch ceiling. A light blue, or even minty blue tone painted on the ceiling of a bright, airy kitchen gives the room a whole new feel. Alternatively, if you have a family room that opens on to a back porch with lots of glass doors that provide easy indoor/outdoor living, consider painting the ceiling inside and outside in the same light blue color to pull the two areas together even more. You can further the blending of the indoors and outdoors by using similar styles of furnishings or decorative features.
Of course, you’re not limited to pastels in your home. Navy blue is a hugely popular color this year and it obviously works extremely well in coastal homes. For a more formal room or study where you combine teak and similar rich wood tones, the navy blue creates a sense of elegance, with white or linen accents. You don’t have to go obvious with ship paintings, anchors, and rope decorations to still create the feel of a luxury yacht from times gone by. After all, elements of vintage mixed with contemporary clean lines is a big trend this year.
Navy and white stripes are always a classic, but pare them down to smaller pieces instead of using them in large furnishings. Another option is to use the colors but avoid the stripes. Go with deep blue walls and white cabinets, counters, and mirror frames in a bathroom.
Many coastal homes have beautiful wooden floors, but there’s always a need for rugs. Sisal and similar sand-toned rugs are common choices, as are rope-braid rugs. However, for something softer and a little different, consider layers of blue, gray, and sand-colored rugs for the living room or bedroom floors. Small, medium, and large rugs in the different colors, layered over each other or even arranged in block patterns bring the colors of the ocean into a room in a new and exciting way.
While blue is always a classic color in coastal design, don’t forget the many shades of green. From soft, earthy greens to vivid chartreuse, you can use the many shades of green the same way you would use blue. Think of all of the foliage, from sea grass to palm trees and have fun creating your own garden-inspired oasis. Plus, the accent colors are almost endless, as you think of all of the colors of beautiful flower blooms that pop against their green leaves.
Finally, don’t forget your coral tones, ranging from deep orangey reds to soft peachy pinks. Combine the two with light walls and vivid curtains, with accents of black and white for a modern interpretation.
There are so many ways to incorporate coastal colors into your homes in Jacksonville Beach FL, whether you choose more traditional options or more modern interpretations. Use lots of sea references with drift wood and rattan or just go for a few jars of shells and an old ship lamp. Decorate in a way that uses the colors and details that speak to you, but don’t forget that coastal homes are rarely afraid of color, so feel free to go bold, even if it’s just a bright pink front door.
