How to Create an Accent Wall
Accent walls can be used in just about any room in your homes in Ponte Vedra FL, giving the room more style and personality. They can be bold or subtle, depending on the atmosphere you want to create, and they’re a great way to add your personal touch to your home. Bedrooms are typical choices for accent walls, but everything from living rooms to powder rooms can have accent walls, so feel free to work with our design team to explore your ideas when we build a custom coastal home for you.
Inherently, an accent wall is typically one wall in a room that is differentiated from the others by color, material, or pattern. However, it doesn’t technically have to be a wall; some people use the ceiling to add that unexpected pop of color, ranging from black to robin’s egg blue or any other color that suits your tastes. You’d be surprised how effective a painted ceiling can be. Choosing a coral, yellow or pale blue in a coastal home, in a room filled with natural light creates a cheerful, natural atmosphere.
Powder rooms are a great place to really have fun with color and pattern. You can be bold and experimental, as it’s a room that you’re not going to be in for long, so there’s more leeway. Consider white wainscotting or tile around the lower half of the room with a big, bold wallpaper for at least one wall where the sink and mirror are, choosing a lighter color from the wallpaper to paint the rest of the walls. Of course, you could always go all out and wallpaper the upper half of all of the walls, letting the white lower half balance it.
Most people choose the bedroom or living room for an accent wall. Choosing the wall comes down to a few factors. Usually, you want to use a wall that is a focal point in the room. In bedrooms, it’s often the wall where the bed is located. If you have a long bedroom and the bed is flanked by two windows, you could use just the wall area between the windows where the bed is as your accent wall. For the living room — or any room, really — you also want to choose a wall that isn’t covered by large pieces of furniture and is fairly balanced without too many asymmetrical elements, such as odd windows. Typically, you want an accent wall to frame one or two smaller, individual pieces, from sideboards to a large, bold work of art, or even simply the TV.
As for the colors, keep in mind the size and layout of the room and the atmosphere you want to create. Cool colors — light blues, greens, purples — help open up a space and work well on narrow walls, making them feel wider. Warm colors, such as red, yellow, and orange, can make a room feel more cozy as the accent wall seems to bring the wall closer. Of course, you also need to think about how colors affect your moods and how you want the room to make people feel.
You can certainly use bold colors for an accent wall, which is a typical choice to add a bright pop of color against more neutral furnishings, with smaller decorative pieces complementing, but not necessarily matching, the accent color. However, you don’t have to go bold for your accent wall. A monochromatic choice is a soothing choice for a bedroom, in particular, but works in a variety of rooms. Choose a lighter base color for the room and then go a few shades darker on the paint swatch to find your accent color. For example, a pale, milky coffee color for a bedroom, accented with the on-trend brownish bronze, with smaller decorative pieces in red or purple creates a cozy bedroom space.
Of course, you can always choose wallpaper prints once again for your accent wall, or even choose wall coverings with texture for a different type of visual interest. Explore the options and you may find something you absolutely love that you’d never have thought of if you didn’t open yourself up to new ideas. You could find yourself falling in love with prints, colors, and textures that you never would have imagined, so scour the magazines, online sites, and more to find ways to create fantastic accent walls in your homes in Ponte Vedra FL.
