At Glenn Layton Homes, a custom home builder in Ponte Vedra FL, we believe in building homes that complement the coastal setting. In Florida, that can result in a variety of architectural styles that draw on the area’s own rich history, as well as traditional coastal designs. Modern Farmhouse architecture is a fantastic design option for a coastal Florida home.
With its many citrus groves, among other agricultural crops, the traditional farmhouse isn’t out of place here. Modern farmhouse style keeps the clean lines of traditional farmhouses, but uses modern details in windows, exteriors, and interiors to create a home that balances the coziness of the traditional with the elegance and style of modern design.
The exterior maintains the clean lines of traditional farmhouses, including the gabled roofs and jutting windows with their crisp triangles and rectangles. Horizontal and vertical rectangles with minimum tracery update the windows, and these rectangles and squares are often repeated on garage doors and other exterior features. Clapboard remains a favorite, but often using more coastal-inspired colors, such as weathered wood tones in gray or grayish blue, or warmer sandstone.
Windows in this modern version are often large, filling up whole walls. They’re often framed in black and have minimal use of window treatments so that the windows – and the view outside – are the main focal point. Additionally, modern farmhouse style frequently features great rooms that are open to the second story, with windows reaching up to the second story as well, for a bright, airy atmosphere.
Rustic, and even reclaimed wood, is used throughout the home, certainly for the floors, but also in the kitchen for cabinets and the dining room for the classic farmhouse table. Another option is a mix of marble and butcher block counters in the kitchen, with matte black hardware, and white cabinets.
In fact, white shiplap, tile, board and batten, beadboard and other clean-line wall coverings are common throughout the interior of the home, with the occasional exposed brick or stone, such as the fireplace, and rib-vaulted high ceilings. Earthy, natural colors, as well as cool, crisp coastal colors work well with the minimalism and clean lines of the modern farmhouse.
Modern farmhouse is a great way to mix old and new. The key is to keep lines clean and simple, while mixing in different textures and natural materials, with occasional accessorized pops of color.
